Roma

Benvenuto! Welcome to Rome. In April of 2002 Mandi and I began our tour together in the capital city. Mandi planned our flights into Rome so that I'd have plenty of time to take this photo before she arrived, though I think four hours is a bit much.

After checking into our hotel we decided to take a late evening stroll through the city to get a headstart on the next day. The Trevi fountain (not pictured) was our first stop, then we noticed that the Pantheon was not too far from there. Here Mandi is smiling by its front.

I took several shots of this as I tried to figure out what shutter speed to use. Notice our ever-so-helpful guide, Frommer's.

Here is a shot of the back of the Pantheon. It was about a twenty foot drop to these ruins of what used to be adjacent to this building.

We still were not very tired, so Mandi and I decided to wander some more. This is the Capital Building in central Rome, though at the time we really hadn't a clue what we were looking at. It was about 10 P.M..

The interrogation of our map wasn't going well, though by the dim city lights we guessed that we were walking by the Forums. Then as our legs and eye lids became allies in trying to direct us back to the hotel, we came upon the ghostly--but so familiar--shape of the Colosseum.

Across the street from that ancient stadium we sat down and read about what we were seeing. Then after a paltry attempt at planning a route back, we headed to our hotel (with only a few wrong turns).

On to Rome by Day.
